Branka Bencic

Branka Bencic participated in a short-term residency of studio das weisse haus, which took place from February 10 until March 3, 2014.

Branka Bencic is an Independent Curator with basic research, writing and curatorial interests include exhibiting moving images, curatorial practices, re-reading historical trajectories of conceptual and avant-garde art, and projects exploring issues on cities, architecture and urban spaces, working in different discoursive and presentation formats.

Currently she is involved in several ongoing programs and a number of individual curatorial projects: Founder and curator of Cinemaniac – research platform for exhibiting moving images established in 2002 as the support program of Pula Film Festival. Since May 2013 she is Artistic director at Apoteka –space for contemporary art, a project space in Vodnjan (Croatia) and curating  Artists’ Cinema ongoing screening program at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb (since 2012). Recent long term research projects and collaborations were focused on experimental film in former Yugoslavia and the emergence of early video art (2010 – ongoing).

Acted as Director and Curator at Gallery 01 (Zagreb 2003 – 2007); Curator at Public Collection, Municipal Gallery and Antun Motika Estate (Pula 2008 – 2009).

Curated  more than 30 group exhibitions and more than 50 solo shows, film and video screening programs in Croatia and internationally. Lectured on contemporary art practices and exhibiting film and video. Publishes regularly on contemporary art and visual culture in newspapers, art magazines and exhibition catalogues. Holds degrees in Art History (MA) and Comparative Literature (MA), Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb.

Curator in residence ISCP, New York; visiting curator IMPAKT Utrecht, Eurodyssee Fellowship, Bruxelles. Lives and works in Pula and Zagreb. Member of AICA, HZSU Croatian freelance part professionals association. Served as jury member  Oberhausen International Short Film Festival; 25FPS International experimental film festival, KulturKontakt, Vienna.
