A warm Welcome to our new Residents

During the summer months, studio das weisse haus was busy organizing our open calls and gathering many applications and portfolios of high quality. Together with our varying juries, we selected who to invite to Vienna: We are happy to announce that the results are in, and we will be welcoming four outstanding Artists in Residence, one Curator in Residence and our first Critic in Residence at our spaces in the upcoming weeks!

Artists in Residence

We are happy to announce our four Artists in Residence, who will be working at studio das weisse haus from September 22 – December 15, 2014.

– Jamie Campbell (CA), photographer, examines media-specific questions of photography and the notion of reality in photographic representation by appropriating means of satire. Learn more about Jamie

– Jiří Franta & David Böhm (CZ) work as an artistic duo by means of drawing. In their wall drawings they emphasize associative processes and stress questions of subjectivity, spontaneity and performativeness in drawing. Learn more about Jiri and David

– Suse Itzel (DE) works mainly in video and installation and focuses on formal artistic questions (construction/destruction), as well as discursive and historical sources, like European design history. Learn more about Suse

Rah (Raheleh Saneie, CA) is a Canadian performance and video artist. She discusses gender identity and constructions of Iranian ethnic identity in her works, in the light of her own biography as a member of Iranian diaspora. Learn more about Rah

This year we received an especially high number of outstanding applications and would like to thank our jury who discussed all the portfolios thoroughly:
Olga Okunev (project coordinator at BKA, department for visual arts, architecture, design, fashion, photography, video and media arts)
–  Eva Schlegl (artist and commissioner of the Austrian pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia 2011)
Katharina Brandl and Klára Stolková for studio das weisse haus

Curator in Residence

Lennard Dost, curator and art critic based in Groningen (NL), fascinated the jury of our Curator in Residence Call with a curatorial project that raises questions of contemporary constructions of European identity, in the light of one anniversary that seems to vanish into a backdrop, because of the high density of anniversaries this year: The bicentennial of the Congress in Vienna.
Lennard will be working on his project from September 22 – November 23, 2014 and will be curating an exhibition that will open at das weisse haus in November!
Learn more about Lennard and his previous projects

Again, we would like to thank our jury members cordially for their voluntary efforts:

Günther Friesinger (media art theorist, curator, artist, head of the paraflows festival)
Dorothea Schellhorn
Sandra Schwender for das weisse haus
Katharina BrandlKlára Stolková for studio das weisse haus

Opening of the exhibition curated by Lennard Dost: November 11, 2014, 19h
Exhibition: November 12 – December 13, 2014

Critic in Residence
We are looking forward to welcoming our first Critic in Residence, Luisa Grigoletto (IT), at studio das weisse haus from November 10 – November 20, 2014. In cooperation with EIKON – International Magazine for Photography and Media Art, we offer our Critic in Residence the opportunity to publish a piece in EIKON and to get to know the Viennese art scene as well as its institutions first hand.

Luisa Grigoletto is a freelance arts writer, whose main focuses are photography and public policies concerning arts and culture. Within these fields she has explored a variety of themes, such as the challenges connected with starting a photography museum in Rome, alternative forms of photojournalism, image dissemination on the internet, and the effects of organized crime on the contemporary art market.

We cordially thank our jury for discussing many interesting applications and reading through all the writing samples that were submitted:
– Bettina Brunner (curator and art critic, Frieze)
Anne Katrin Feßler (art critic, Der Standard)
Günther Friesinger (media art theorist, curator, artist, head of the paraflows festival)
